Things you should know before moving to Mississippi

    By James J. | Best moving destinations | 0 comment | 6 December, 2019 | 0

Moving to Mississippi can be quite challenging. Mississippi is much different than other states and it can be a shock to a newcomer. So what are the things we should know before the move? How is moving to Mississippi different from moving to other states?

Well, Mississippi is a state that has a long and turbulent history within the US. It has been experiencing some economic trouble since 2008 and is trying to recover. But first things first. What are the main aspects to consider when moving to Mississippi?

    The climate and nature

The state is marked with a specific climate. The state experiences very mild winters and has very hot summers. On average, the weather is very hot and humid with occasionally very warm, above average weather. In autumn the state experiences tornado season while rain downpours are customary and pass quickly. The “hellish climate” is certainly something to get accustomed to so be prepared for certain discomfort when moving in.

Mississippi offers beautiful nature, but the climate can be frightening at times.

Mississippi is a state of the great diversity of nature. Named after the Mississippi River it has an abundance of fertile agricultural land in the river delta. It has was expanses of farmland that is used for the production of almost all cultures. Besides the farmland, the state also has a wide variety of geographical features and attractions. From dense forests, trough the swampland, to the sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi has something to offer to everyone. Change of scenery often motivates people to start relocating within MS state lines in order to experience and explore something new.

    Economy

Mississippi has been struggling from the 2008 crisis and has not quite recovered from it. The situation is that a rural state as it is wasn’t able to recover quickly from the crisis. This caused some of the economic criteria and factors to change and be beneficial while some are a burden. First of all, Mississippi is now among the most affordable states to live in. The cost of living as well as the cost of real estate is very low. The person moving into the state will be able to make the dollar last much longer than somewhere else. On the other hand, scarce job opportunities do not make the state desirable. The state experiences the decrease of the population that causes a low demand for property that in turn drives the real estate prices and rent down. At the same time, there is no need for new housing which means the average age of property is increasing.

The economic situation is not great but the state is working to recover and needs a boost. The decrease in population is certainly not beneficial so, Mississippi is welcoming newcomers. If you decide for a long-distance move to Mississippi you should know to research and hire reputable movers such as Spyder Moving Services.

With its rich and diverse nature, the State has a lot to offer to newcomers.

    Education

Mississippi is home to over 50 colleges, technical schools, and universities. Some of the top-ranked colleges and universities of the south are stationed in Mississippi. To name a few:

    • University of Mississippi
    • Mississippi College
    • Mississippi State University
    • University of Southern Mississippi

With such an offer of educational institutions, Mississippi is at the forefront of education. The schools are affordable and available but still, not many inhabitants choose to go to college. However, affordable higher education and low cost of living draw in a lot of young people from other states that move in for college.

    Culture and population

Mississippi has a rich history stemming all the way back from the civil war to today. The state has always been in transition and went through constant change. One of the examples is the fact that the state was among the first to fight for civil rights and make judicial changes in favor of equal rights.

People are of diverse cultures and are mainly very religious. Mississippi is thought to one of the most religious states and people exhibit great hospitality and are considered to be the most charitable and happiest people in the US.

One of the things the inhabitants are most proud of is that the state is home to blues music and also the birthplace of the King of rock. The soulfulness of the music translates into the everyday way of life resulting in a slower, laid back pace of life that is a foundation of southern charm, warmth, and hospitality.

The Mississippi River is a great love of the people who live there and this is one of the things you should know before moving to Mississippi.

Pros and cons for moving to Mississippi

So, if you are thinking of moving to Mississippi you can surely prepare a list of pros and cons to help you decide. It is not an easy list and anyone can make a different one but some of the elements you should know and put on the list may be the following:

The state has affordable education and a quality education system. It also has a lower cost of living due to poor economic performance. As such it is very affordable and for educational purposes very inviting. It offers a slow-paced lifestyle with deeply rooted southern hospitality and strong traditions. To anyone working in agriculture, it offers perfect farming conditions in the form of fertile land and favorable climate.

It also has a downside of being one of the poorest states in the US. Healthcare is not at the desired level and the state is not really capable to provide for the basic needs of its citizens. Jobs are scares and economic opportunities are almost nonexistent with a clear and growing problem of poverty.

So what should you know before moving to Mississippi

Mississippi may not seem inviting due to its predominant economic problems but it still is one of the most hospitable states in the US. It has a lot to offer if you are willing to tackle both the good and the bad. The risk-takers will certainly be welcomed. You should research and find out everything you should know before you decide and prepare for a long-distance move to the Magnolia state.
