What do you need to know when you are moving your boat?
Yes, it is easy to move it by water, hoist the anchor and you are on the way. Yes, you need to know where you are going or which port is the next location. But moving your boat by land is a whole lot different thing. New sophisticated roads and highways are reaching all parts of the globe now where there is navigable water. Moving your boat by land to explore hard-to-reach places by sea is becoming more and more practical. There are many specialists now that move yachts and boat events to 60ft long with a motor. On the other side if you don’t want help from specialists you can do it by yourself if you have the means to it.

Organize your moving
Before moving your boat by land there are few things you need to do beforehand:
- Drain the gas
- Drain all the water and pull the plug when you’re done. Disconnect all cabling.
- Clear everything out of the boat.
- Takedown protruding obstructions
- Securely latch all doors.
- Check with your boat insurance company
Drain the gas from the tank, you can do this manually by literally draining outgas or you can burn the gas in the last ride before moving, take few hours, enjoy that sunset where you at, for the last time for the season, or last time for good. It will relax you and prepare you mentally for the road ahead.
Drain all the water and pull the plug. Pumps need additional checking so as water systems and AC unit if you pose one. Be careful here.
Disconnect all cabling. Open it up, check for engine battery, check for any other battery if are using it. Detach the cables. Sound systems, detach them. You do not want any short circuit possibility.
Clear everything out of the boat, you do not want a total mess after few curves on the road.
And for the end of preparations, check with your boat insurance company how do they feel about your policy for moving the boat by land.
Time to move
So it is time to pack your bags and get yourself a lift on the trailer for moving, this is one of the things that most docs and marines offer. When you get your boat on a trailer, scrub off all aquatic life that likes to live on people’s boats. Do this thoroughly because there is a lot of unwanted hitchhikers in aquatic life. So you are no longer in deep water, you are not in the water at all now.
